WhiteBoard Designers Support the Torchlight 5K

WhiteBoard designers courageously braved hot-humid weather on Wednesday for the Aquatennial Festival’s Torchlight 5K. The course starts at St. Mary’s Basilica, winds down Hennepin Avenue, and eventually finishes by St. Anthony Main.  Great job guys!

Robotic Therapy Animals? Yup!

Hasbro has recently entered the area of products for Senior Citizens with their Joy for all Companion Pets.

For $99, this electronic companion pet cat serves as a therapy device.  It realistically responds to touch with purring and other motions using input from motion and light sensors.  So far the response has been great and users are commenting on how realistic the experience can be.

With ever increasing needs for demand and care of this growing demographic, there is a great opportunity for design to make living better.

WhiteBoard Hosts UW-Stout Sketching Workshop!

WhiteBoard hosted a Saturday morning sketch workshop for the students of the University of Wisconsin Stout Industrial Design Program. The focus was on quick idea generation and communication, teaching the value of sketching as a collaborative tool in development. In the second half of the workshop, students learned the technique of grayscale marker rendering for form development and styling. We were able to help students gain valuable inside knowledge as they prepare to enter the industry. We enjoyed having them here and look forward to hosting another event in the future!

Partial Solar Eclipse October 23, 2014 | WhiteBoard Photography

Solar Eclipse October 23rd 2014
A few WhiteBoard team members went up on the roof between 5-6pm with both a Nikon D7100, Canon 6D, welding helmets and heavy shades.

The shooting conditions into the brightest object man has ever known were quite challenging and the cameras struggled to get a nice crisp image. We ended up shooting some photos through the welding helmets and got a little better result.

All in all, a very cool experience.  We think if we had a second chance at it, we’d use an infrared filter, though the next solar eclipse doesn’t happen until 2017.

Ice Caves | Inspired by Everything!

One of WhiteBoard's photographers, Ryan Chernik, had the unique opportunity last month to visit the Superior Ice Caves up in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Trips like this offer an opportunity for inspiration and perspective. Here at WhiteBoard, we are Inspired by Everything!

Ryan shoots and processes some of his photos in a distinctive manner called HDR or High Dynamic Range imaging. You’ll notice emphasis and detail in all tonal values as well as saturated color. It brings more to the human eye than what it normally sees.  Each shot, put through up to 3 different programs sometimes takes up to an hour each to edit.

“The interesting thing about the ice caves is that you’ll never see it again the same way next year. The ice may form in completely new ways or not even freeze at all. What you’re witnessing is a temporary display of nature’s beauty and once it melts, it’s gone forever.”
